Taking off quantities – does anyone use standard dim paper today? I suspect not – why then do most taking-off textbooks still refuse to acknowledge that spreadsheets are now the most widely used format for taking off quantities outside of software packages? When will academia and trainers catch up with what is going on in industry? When I present CPD events for industry most qs’s and construction managers have not seen dim paper since they left university or college and don’t know which why round the sheet should be used. Some of the problem lies in the fact that, unlike dim paper, there is no standard spread sheet taking off model, but surely one could be devised?
Time for change?
